Doorways to Blumberg

Individual expression takes on many forms. Everything from the clothing one wears to the choice of artwork or posters on the wall are an expression of some kind. In a residence hall, students express themselves in many ways through their room. The matching (or mismatching) of sheets, the choice of carpeting, posters, etc... Yet all of this is on the interior which is a somewhat private environment. Private in that students can choose who they invite inside or whether to keep the door to the hallway open or not. Yet walking through a residence hall once discovers that the door itself is more than just an entrance to the room. Just like the landscaping of a house says something about those who live there, the decorations on the exterior of a resident's room door is a public expression of those who occupy the room. Everything from the choice to put nothing but a dry erase board, to the choice of photos or posters. Some doors are decorated to reflect the season, others reveal the latest trophies from a night of alcohol consumption. The photos below reveal the variety of doors and expressions that we encountered walking through a first-year residence hall at Indiana State University.
